Lancashire referee who quit Sunday League after 50-man brawl speaks out on latest referee attack
A referee has spoken out about abuse fellow referees receive whilst officiating in the aftermath of a Lancashire official being attacked on the pitch.
Barry, whose job is not part of the same league Mr Bradshaw officiates in, told LancsLive: "Having read what I've read, is completely abhorrent. It's not just the fact that he's a referee. It's the fact that it's one human being against another. Someone thinks that that's okay to do." "So I've got 28 years experience behind me, so for someone who is just starting, they would probably just pack up the whistle and just give up."
"I know referees who have said 'I don't get paid at all for this'. I try and encourage them to stay in the game and say look, deal with these people deal with the managers who think it's right to shout from the touchlines and try and deal with the players who then react accordingly. If we all stand together, we will make an impact because the message will get across."
"I am happy to say that from our point of view, from the west side West Lancs league point of view, what we hear is rare. We might have a referee who gets verbally abused and we will deal with that as a league, but physical assault, I mean I've done 28 years of service and can't think of a time where I've physically felt threatened. We don't want rare incidents like this to deter people from becoming referees.
