Long-term care residents vaccinated with their third COVID-19 vaccine dose at least three months prior were eligible to receive the fourth dose from December 30, 2021, in Ontario, Canada. The most popular supplement as the fourth dose was 100 micrograms of messenger ribonucleic acid -1273.
The team used laboratory, vaccine, reportable disease, and health administrative data from December 30, 2021, to August 3, 2022, to perform a test-negative study among LTC residents older than 60 as of December 30, 2021. The SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant was the predominant variant of concern throughout the analysis. Therefore, until Delta was determined by either whole genome sequencing or spike -gene target failure, patients were assumed to be Omicron-infected.
Results Almost 92% of Ontario LTC residents underwent SARS-CoV-2 testing at least once throughout the study period. At the time of testing, 46.3% of cases and 48.7% of controls had received the fourth vaccine dose. Compared to patients who had a third vaccination 84 days prior, fewer residents who received their fourth dose resided in a hospital with an active outbreak. Furthermore, 57% and 95% of individuals vaccinated with a minimum of three and four vaccine doses have received mRNA-1273.
