About the study In the present study, the team used the medical record data between March 1, 2020, and February 28, 2021, from the Epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2 in Pregnancy and Infancy Network: Electronic Cohort to analyze medically attended COVID-19 incidence including outpatient care cases and hospitalizations among infants less than six months old.
Additionally, factors such as documented COVID-19 in mothers during pregnancy or in the postpartum period, gestational age at delivery, and sites and levels of SARS-CoV-2 circulation were considered while estimating the incidence rates. Analysis of medically attended COVID-19 incidence rates according to race and ethnicity indicated a higher incidence among infants born to Hispanic and Non-Hispanic Black mothers, suggesting an increased COVID-19 burden among minority populations.
Conclusions To summarize, the study assessed the incidence rates of medically attended COVID-19 in infants below six months of age according to maternal COVID-19 status during pregnancy and the postpartum period, race or ethnicity of the mother, underlying medical conditions in mother and infant, and community transmittance.
