Hundreds waited in line Monday to get a look at Miss Piggy — not the sassy pink Muppet, but rather the hurricane hunter aircraft named after the popular pig.

The WP-3D, known as Miss Piggy, contains scientific tools, radars and recording systems to gather data on the atmosphere. The 46-year-old plane collects low-altitude data on weather events, providing information that cannot be collected on the ground or from satellites. NOAA also has a similar plane nicknamed Kermit, but it let Miss Piggy take the spotlight Monday and was not on the tour.
Miss Piggy has a crew of about 15 to 18 people on board which includes two pilots who fly the aircraft, one pilot who rests on a rotation, two flight engineers, a meteorologist, a navigator, multiple research scientists, a data technician and another person collecting the weather data.When the weather calls for it, Miss Piggy flies into storms at about 8,000 to 10,000 feet. The aircraft crew is able to collect and send real-time data on extreme weather events as they occur.
“The more data they get, the more precisely they can start predicting where the storms go,” Trottier said. “... It translates into better information for people so they can prepare for where it's going to hit, who it's going to hit, who needs to evacuate and who may not need to.”
