Hurricane Preparedness Week: What to put in a hurricane emergency kit

is officially upon us, those in vulnerable areas should get out their shopping bags, stock up and fill their emergency kit. Preparing an emergency kit in advance allows the organized to skip the trip when an actual threat is imminent and stores are overcrowded with last-minute shoppers, all trying to get their hands on the same emergency supplies.
National Hurricane Preparedness Week began Sunday, about a month before the official start of hurricane season, June 1. A home emergency kit should consist of a go-bag in case of an evacuation order and a shelter-in-place kit for situations in which you choose to stay home and wait out the hurricane. The following checklist was compiled based on existing hurricane emergency kits from a variety of disaster-related official resources.
