For all those whose dads are no longer with them, this one's for you ♥️

In this essay, Julie Hubschman talks about how losing her father has affected the way she views, and celebrates, Father's Day.Not because it is a holiday used by companies to make money — but because my dad is dead.

In case you have not been on the internet, watched TV, listened to the radio, read a newspaper, or went to a store recently, this Sunday is Father’s Day: a card-company holiday to say “Thanks Dad for being you,” or some other similar cliché. My dad unexpectedly died a little over a year ago, and I seethe when I see advertisements reminding me to “Buy something Dad would love for Father’s Day.

And it is not just the one day, it is the weeks following Father's Day too. This past week, I brought up with a friend that Father’s Day was this weekend. He was surprised, mentioned that he hadn’t done anything for his dad yet, and thanked me for reminding him. As we went our separate ways, I wondered why I was more cognizant of this day then him. The ads are everywhere, Facebook even reminded me this week, but somehow they all slipped by him.

It is almost comical that this holiday now causes me so much grief because my father hated Hallmark holidays. He would always ask why there had to be one day to say how much you love and care about someone when you have 364 other days that you should also say it. And that is true. But I still feel this urge to celebrate him and thank him for making me who I am today. So this Father’s Day, I am going to take a little of my dad’s approach and a little of my own.

So, this Sunday I will celebrate my Dad on Father’s Day. On Monday, I will still hate Father’s Day, but I will have made it another day, and I will have 364 more to think about him and celebrate him.
