A mum has been told her tap water is safe to drink despite a jug of it developing green algae overnight. Eimer Short from Lisburn, Co Antrim, is one of 460,000 houses where treated drinking water is initially sourced from the now deeply polluted Lough Neagh.
"I'm just not willing to take the chance because no one has been able to convince me yet that my water source which developed algae is good for drinking." Eimer filled her coffee machine reservoir on the night of September 22, in preparation for early morning coffee on Saturday. "They added, 'due to the increased levels of algae in the water' green algae appearing overnight is 'not uncommon' and they added, 'however we are confident it is safe to use.' But we are not drinking the water from our taps, we are not cooking with it either or using it to clean our teeth.
Top news stories today A spokesperson for NI Water said: "In relation to the concern regarding water in the water jug and the green appearance, sometimes filter jugs, coffee machines and filters can be problematic if they have not been regularly cleaned, or the filter has not been replaced, in line with manufacturer's instructions.
"The taste and smell can be earthy and/or musty. Therefore, while the water from your tap can be used in the normal way, we fully appreciate some customers might notice a difference in the taste and/or odour to their drinking water at this time. NI Water's number one priority is the quality and safety of your drinking water.
