Eimer had filled her coffee machine reservoir at night in preparation for early morning coffee

A mum whose household tap water developed green algae overnight in a jug in her home, has been told by NI Water it is safe to drink.

“My children Ben and Tilly, are teenagers who are heavily involved in sports.. They consume a lot of water and now we're buying drums of water from Lidl to keep us going because I just don't trust that the water in our home is 100% safe. Carer Eimer, 42, said: “I’d filled the water reservoir of our Tassimo coffee machine, I usually fill it up every night before I go to bed so it’s ready for my husband to have a coffee in the morning, but on Saturday morning the water was green and algae was very clearly visible in it.

“How Northern Ireland has allowed the main water source for hundreds of thousands of families to become so polluted and without a crisis action plan in full swing to clean it up in place, is astonishing. I’m a 42-year-old woman and I know how to clean my coffee machine and filters, I know what washing up liquid is for and our coffee machine is kept in a shaded area of the kitchen, yet this algae grew overnight. This is not an issue with home hygiene, this is an issue with the water source.

“NI Water’s number one priority is the quality and safety of your drinking water. We can assure our customers that the water supplied from our Water Treatment Works is safe to drink and use as normal. It is important to remember, the drinking water that we supply is fully treated in our Water Treatment Works before it is supplied to customers, we are not supplying our customers with raw untreated water directly from the raw water source.

"Microcystins are the most encountered cyanobacterial toxins in the UK and they are produced by a wide range of cyanobacteria. We test for Microcystin-LR in the treated drinking water supply. All testing to date shows that the results are all below the Limit of Quantification . Therefore, the treatment processes in place at the water treatment works are effectively dealing with the risk for algae in the raw water.
