Despite producing relatively little gas, these wells actually emit over half the methane pollution from the gas industry and would be subject to zero state inspection requirements.
Methane is a far more powerful greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide and is responsible for about 30% of the climate chaos we are currently experiencing. Just look at last Saturday, which was Harrisburg’s hottest day ever recorded in November.
Requiring the gas industry to find and fix malfunctioning equipment to reduce leaks is the easiest, most effective way to address methane pollution. This isn’t costly and will save gas, the commodity gas companies are trying to sell. These companies are also raking in record profits right now. Exxon just set an all-time quarterly record with Chevron having its second best quarter ever, and fracked gas sales were the driver.
