Man on train to Blackpool waved knife around in front of terrified passenger after hiding 10in blade under his shirt

29-year-old after pleading guilty to possession of a bladed article at Blackpool Magistrates on June 2. The court heard how Finney of Dudley Road, Kingswinford was arrested on Sunday, April 30 after British Transport Police received a call via radio.

They heard that a man had reportedly been carrying a knife on a train that was due to arrive at Blackpool North station. A passenger reported the sighting after he sat next to Finney who lifted his top to show him the handle of the large knife.Alarmed by what he was seeing, but not wanting to panic Finney, he then made conversation with him and asked him about his journey. In response, Finney lifted his top up once again, but this time, he pulled out the knife from his trousers.

He then started to wave the 10 inch blade around. This prompted the passenger to leave the train at the next stop and contact police immediately.Investigating officer PC Rachel Bond said: "There is absolutely no legitimate reason to carry a potentially deadly weapon in a public place. Thankfully, with Finney's arrest and jail time another knife has been removed from the streets and the rail network.

"Praise must be given to the brave passenger who remained calm through his interaction with Finney and obtained enough information to pass onto officers the moment he left the train. Knives are a blight on our community and together with colleagues from other forces we constantly work to remove them from society, saving lives in the process.

"We are committed to keeping the public safe and removing deadly weapons from the rail network. If you spot anything suspicious on the rail network you can text us on 61016. In an emergency always call 999."
