Manchester City beat Fulham 5-1 in the Premier League as Erling Haaland scored three goals after a controversial Nathan Ake goal
Manchester City ended their fourth game of the season cruising, their fans enjoying themselves as the team played out what the scoreline will read as a comfortable win. Oscar Bobb came on for his senior debut for the final few minutes of a 4-1 win that the league table will rightly record as perfection in these early stages.
What happened next is unclear. Michael Oliver went over to his linesman to consult over the decision but gave a goal, before a VAR check upheld that decision - but who gave what and why remains a mystery. Three points are three points and should not be sniffed yet this was by far the scratchiest of City's four so far this season. Whether coincidence or not, without the control of the injured Jack Grealish there was no control of the football and very little rhythm.
That didn't seem to matter just after the 30-minute mark when Mateo Kovacic showed his increasing ability to mimic Ilkay Gundogan as he slipped Erling Haaland through in the box. The run was perfectly timed and whether he shot or squared the ball it went across for Julian Alvarez to tap in the opening goal.
The pressure had been building for some time when Haaland latched onto an Alvarez through-ball that had bounced off Ream, and slotted past Leno. City have no better player at putting difficult moments behind them to focus on what is in front of them.
