Screenwriter Akela Cooper chats with VF about M3GAN's status as a queer icon, her lifelong love of horror, and more.
As the screenwriter, were you on set for any of the filming? How involved were you in the final product?. He gave me a call when he was brought on. He was like, "I love the script." He did his pass for what he wanted to see. Then due to COVID production change, it went from Canada to New Zealand. So unfortunately, due to the pandemic, I didn't get to go to set and hang out.
A little bit of both. I kind of had a heads up at Comic-Con. I was on a panel with a bunch of other wonderful horror writers and directors. One of them wasHe pulled me aside, and he was like, "M3GAN is going to be such a gay icon." I was like, "What are you talking about?" Sadly, there's no real romance in the movie, but I'm like, "There's no overtly gay character. What are you talking about?" He's like, "Oh no. It's not about that.
Another thing that makes M3GAN an icon is her singing and dancing. The audience went in knowing that she was going to dance, but the singing was a complete surprise.
