, the producer explained that adding McDonald’s into the storyline would provide a unique perspective on Sylvie, a character driven by anger and revenge for the longest time. And by exploring the simple joy of nostalgia, the story arc would see the character enjoying even the most ordinary of things.
“This character had been on a decades-long, maybe centuries-long revenge mission, and the classic trope of those stories is that it’s all-consuming, and she’s not thinking about what comes next,” Wright said.
Wright added that they wanted to tell a profound story that would establish the character’s desire for ordinary happiness. “I was worried that McDonald’s would think we wanted to do something ironic or make fun of them. But we were selling an earnest story, a love letter to nostalgia through a character’s eyes who will see all of the novelty and joy of it,” he also told Fast Company.
