Why am I perplexed? Our United States of America is a constitutional republic that was formed to be run by the people and for the people. That is good. We have elections to ensure all our citizens have a right to voice their opinion on who should run our country — whether Republicans, Democrats or other. That is good.

However, I am perplexed when I watch some news shows who ask our citizens on the street simple questions about our great country and its history. Besides perplexing, it is very sad how many people have zero clue about our republic and its history. That is very, very sad.John Gretz, WindcrestCongress must act before the end of the year to protect the people who were brought to this country as children. This is the only place they have ever called home.

Thousands of people are in jeopardy of losing their livelihoods and opportunities for education. “Dreamers” are hardworking members of the community who play a significant role in the national workforce. They contribute to the tax base of the country and provide essential services. They provide workers who are essential to the community.

Ending DACA, or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, will create more labor shortages than we are already experiencing. It will have a detrimental impact on the economy, which is now struggling as it is. Many Dreamers are in the service sector as health care workers, teachers and in the retail market.

Congress needs to give them permanent protection to keep their families together. This can be a magnificent example of bipartisan legislation that can help heal the divisions we are experiencing in our country. I urge all of us to contact our representatives and tell them to do the best for all of us.They were brought to the U.S. as young children and have grown up as citizens. This is the only country they know, love and support.
