Week one of district is in the books and the Lady Mavs are no worse for the wear.
Memorial freshman Dayami Reyes hustles up court against the Lady Trojan defense Tuesday. The Lady Mavs gave their bench plenty of quality minutes in the 35-point victory.Pasadena Memorial High School's varsity girls basketball team is guaranteed of being in good shape going into the Christmas break, but they'd prefer to be in excellent shape.
Behind the strength of five 3-point goals, Pineda scored a game-high 28 points as she and her teammates improved to 2-0 for the young district race with a Dobie contest waiting in the wings next Tuesday. Pineda nearly matched the entire South Houston team in field goals. She finished with 10 and the Lady Trojans could only muster 11.
There was one stretch where she couldn't miss. Bridging the first and second periods, she scored the team's last 10 points of the first period and then scored the opening five points of the third period. Three of her five 3-point goals arrived in that stretch. She can contribute on defense, too. Her next-to-last bucket was due to a steal
"We mix it up in practice. We do bigs versus smalls and then we have starters versus the young ones. We have two freshmen and two sophomores coming from the bench and this is us with three kids who have knee injuries," Azul said."She's being a great teammate right now. Even my kids who are hurt, they're super invested. They know the plays and they know their responsibilities. We're fortunate to have kids that are present in the moment.
