Troy University finishes Jon Sumrall’s first season as head coach on an 11-game winning streak, third-longest in the country.
Troy once again played its best football in the second half on Friday, rallying to beat UT-San Antonio 18-12 in the Duluth Trading Cure Bowl in Orlando, Fla.
Troy came into Friday No. 24 in the College Football Playoff committee rankings, meaning it should end the season ranked in the Top 25 for the first time as an FBS program. All the success of 2022 — including a Sun Belt Conference championship — comes after three straight losing seasons in which the Trojans went a combined 15-19.
The Roadrunners’ Kevorian Barnes ran 53 yards to the Troy 5 with around 8 minutes to play, with Trojans safety Dell Pettus making what turned out to be a game-saving tackle. Quarterback Frank Harris threw to a wide-open Chris Carpenter in the back of the end zone on second-and-goal, but Carpenter simply dropped the ball without being touched.
Barnes ran for 132 yards and Harris threw for 198, but UTSA went just 3-for-12 on third down and committed eight penalties for 89 yards. Most costly were turnovers on four straight possessions from late in the second quarter until the middle of the third, allowing the Trojans to rally. Watson passed for just 113 yards for Troy, and was sacked six times. The Trojans did not eclipse 100 yards of total offense until late in the third quarter.
UTSA led 12-7 at the half as Troy totaled just 66 yards of total offense. The Trojans put together a scoring drive just before the break, aided by three Roadrunners penalties and an interception that UTSA’s Clifford Chatman fumbled right back to Troy.
