The condition is baffling doctors and resulted in what Good Morning Britain star Kate described as a 'really near miss'
Kate Garraway has shared a fresh update on her husband Derek Draper's health, revealing a new condition he has developed that is 'baffling' doctors. The Good Morning Britain star has been helping care for Derek since early 2020 after he contracted Coronationvirus.
Another of Derek's struggles comes from his lungs. He can't breathe in oxygen nor breathe out carbon dioxide efficiently, meaning his body is "slightly poisoned all the time". Kate says Derek now urgently needs rehab to help him breathe properly again, and has detailed a recent scary incident.She told the Sunday Times he has developed a "weird choking" condition that's baffling doctors. "It happened again just last weekend," she said.
But he is still facing a long road to recovery, with Kate worried their children will have to act as "carers" more and more. She said her husband becomes "very emotional about the strain this has put on me" but having an illness can "strip you of your empathy". She also said she has never had a "period where we could say 'Well, at least he’s safe now'.
"But I want to champion the cause that everyone in my position faces because I know people are drowning trying to navigate through the care system. We talk about a crisis but it is beyond crisis. It is very lonely and very difficult, and I at least do have that voice.
