Jeff Probst on having the oldest Survivor cast ever for Winners at War
, which had an average age of 37.25. I asked Jeff Probst on day 1 of filming for season 40 what it means having the oldest cast the show has ever seen. “What’s super cool about looking at this group is that not one time did we think about age — ever, when we were casting it,” says the host. “Never. Nobody from CBS said, ‘Hey, you know we still need to keep some young people.’ It was a simple idea: Get the 20 best winners, and they’re saying yes, they’re saying yes, they’re saying yes.
In fact, Probst says they never even looked at age when casting the season: “I don’t even know what the average age is. I actually have no idea. I think Denise is probably the oldest, but I’m not sure, so I don’t know. Our age range is 26 to 49, I don’t know. Never occurred to me. Don’t care. It’s great, right? It says you have enough confidence in the show and the audience that this is what they want.
In general, older players can tend to be more interesting characters simply due to the fact that they have lived more and been through more — both good and bad — that has helped define them. Probst alluded to that in terms of talking about the newest cast. “There are some cool things when you think about the fact that Amber was this young woman and she’s now a mature mom,” says the host. “Or you see Danni Boatwright, who played however many years ago, that’s pretty cool.
