Bootlegging, corruption and murder in Saskatchewan\u0027s 1920s were the inspiration behind Bean Fate, a novel by former Molson CEO James Arnett.

A prominent corporate lawyer in the 1970s, Arnett served as CEO of Molson and chairman of several prominent organizations, including the Montreal Canadiens and Ontario’s Hydro One, before taking on multiple government consulting roles. He’s also the father of actor/comedian Will Arnett, who has appeared in numerous Hollywood films and TV series, including Arrested Development and 30 Rock.

The Bronfmans operated the Seagram Company for many years and are considered one of Canada’s most successful families. They have deep Saskatchewan roots and a long history in the whiskey/liquor business, dating back to the prohibition era. Arnett discovered historical accounts of various illegal activities, political corruption and even murder. He was particularly captivated by the story of Paul Matoff, a Bronfman brother-in-law who was killed in 1922 while overseeing a liquor delivery near the U.S. border in Bienfait.

Although no one was convicted of the murder, Arnett came up with his own story about a rookie cop who solved the crime. He even enlisted a professional screenwriter to assist in writing a movie treatment.
