James Cameron says it's possible he passes Avatar 4 & 5 directing duties to another filmmaker. 'The Avatar films themselves are kind of all-consuming. I’ve got some other things I’m developing as well that are exciting.'
James Cameron might not direct upcoming Avatar sequels Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 and instead pass the baton to another director by the fourth and fifth installments. Released in 2009, Cameron's original sci-fi movie once again proved the director's penchant for breaking box office records and pushing the limits of filmmaking technology. The incredible success of Avatar led to 20th Century Fox greenlighting plans for him to make four sequels.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Despite those concerns, Disney and 20th Century have forged ahead with Cameron's vision. The director filmed Avatar: The Way of Water and Avatar 3 at the same time to make the most of the child actors playing major roles. The third film in the Avatar franchise is scheduled to release in December 2024.

I think eventually over time – I don’t know if that’s after three or after four – I’ll want to pass the baton to a director that I trust to take over, so I can go do some other stuff that I’m also interested in. Or maybe not. I don’t know.
The possibility that someone other than Cameron directs Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 could be significant. It is possible the filmmaker is just growing a bit tired after developing Avatar: The Way of Water for so long, but he might also be looking ahead at what this commitment really requires. If Cameron directs every Avatar sequel, he'd work on these movies until his mid-70s - assuming there are no more delays.
There is still a lot that needs to happen before someone other than Cameron directs an Avatar sequel movie. However, the filmmaker has set up the franchise to handle a director switch quite favorably. Cameron previously said each of the Avatar sequels' stories is standalone, which could allow a new director to leave their mark. It would also be interesting to see the reaction to such a development if Avatar 2 & 3 prove to be big hits.
