Diet vs exercise: experts call time on this slimming showdown

Life is short. Right? What, with the best shampoo, multi-tasking serum and fake tan to stock up on; chances are there’s barely a second spare in your day to spoon down some healthy yogurt or squeeze in an ab workout, let alone contemplate how to lose weight well.

‘A combination of diet and exercise is best at any stage of weight loss,’ says Albert Mathenny, co-founder of SoHo Strength Lab and Promix Nutrition.To solve that mystery, we called in the experts.First up, it’s important to know what you’re dealing with when it comes to weight loss – ie. how exactly does the lb-loss process work?

‘To create a 500-calorie deficit, you would need to run for around 45 minutes at 6mph , every day,’ says PT andco-founder Luke Hughes. ‘Over the course of seven days, that would equate to 1lb of weight loss per week. Two hours of Pilates or yoga would shift a similar amount.’ And the research agrees – the University of Illinois at Chicago, for example, found that daily fasting alone, which in the essence of the 5:2 diet and 16:8 diet, promotes weight loss.So where does exercise come in to the equation?

And Dr Norton agrees. ‘Building muscle with resistance exercises increases calorie burn, as muscle burns more energy than fat so you can lose weight even when sitting on the sofa. Plus, exercising in the cold can boost brown fat, which burns rather than stores energy.
