The stakes in the coming impeachment debate are obvious for the president and Republicans. Yet they also are considerable for his Democratic pursuers.
For months, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi resisted pressure bubbling up from the liberal base of her Democratic Party to begin impeachment hearings against President Trump.
After all, she knew the risks. She lived through the impeachment of Bill Clinton, during which the man who lost his job wasn’t the Democratic president who actually was impeached by the House, but rather the one who led the impeachment march, Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich.
