Introduced in 1977 and discontinued in 1985, in watch circles it has remained a coveted piece. Now Vacheron has reintroduced it as the Historiques 222 in yellow gold.
In came Patek Philippe’s Nautilus and IWC’s Ingenieur SL, both in 1976, and Piaget’s 1979 Polo Sport, a piece designed explicitly for the cream of New York society who by then had got the luxury sports watch brief.
Its time was short-lived. Come the mid-1980s, Swiss watchmaking was nursing deep wounds inflicted by the Quartz Crisis, a season defined by not just the advance of electronic watches from the Far East, but also the strengthening of the Swiss franc. In 1985, the 222 was discontinued, relegating it to collector curio, where it’s been ever since.Among watch aficionados, the mythology around the 222 has grown.
The 222’s story didn’t die in 1985, though. As well as popping up at auction from time to time, it served as the template for Vacheron Constantin’s Overseas, a sports watch collection that was launched in 1996 and that has been revamped several times since.
