How to make sure AI furthers gender equality—and doesn't frustrate it:

LinkedIn recently worked with the World Economic Forum to across different industries and sectors using LinkedIn data. We paid particularly close attention to Artificial Intelligence , a technology that some see as a way to accelerate progress towards gender equality. Doing so revealed a stark reality: only 22% of those with skills in Artificial Intelligence are women.

The potential for AI to further equality is genuine. However, we need to move beyond the idea that technology and data are inherently neutral and fair. Unless we intentionally identify and address inequality, we are very likely to unconsciously further it. The rapid growth of AI makes this an urgent issue – and we need to respond to it on two levels.

I know that these measures can work. At LinkedIn Marketing Solutions we’ve been able to make progress towards gender balance at all levels of seniority by insisting on seeing balanced shortlists for every role we need to fill, even if that means taking longer to fill them. When we did so, we found that, worldwide, women apply for around 20% fewer jobs than men, despite viewing a similar number of potential opportunities. Research suggests this is becauseunless they meet 100% of the criteria listed for a job, whereas men believe they could land the role with just 60%.
