Although barely 40 musicians could squeeze onto the small stage of the old Miller Memorial Theater — located a fair distance across Hermann Park from the theater’s present hillside location, which opened in 1968 and was renovated in 2009 — the initial concert in August 1940 was very much an experiment.
Roussel approached the symphony’s conductor at the time, Ernest Hoffman, who was skeptical about the idea until local businessman N.D. Nahman agreed to put up $1,000. The evening of the concert, the roads surrounding Hermann Park were clogged with cars; according to Roussel’s book, police estimated the crowd at some 15,000 people. The concert wound up making money, and “discovered a new, unsuspected and greatly impressive interest in the orchestra,” Roussel wrote.
As usual, the orchestra opens its Miller season this weekend with an eye on the next generation of conductors: this year’s include former Philadelphia Orchestra associate conductor Erina Yeshima ; Chicago Opera Theater music director Lidiya Yankovskya ; and former Nashville Symphony associate conductor Vinay Parameswaran . And, for the first time since 2019, the orchestra will celebrate July 4 at Miller — no rockets, though.
