Together we are edging, crisis by endless crisis, towards a defining general election in 2024. It’s an election that we already know will be fought on two deeply important issues and one utterly facile one: the cost of living, the state of our national health service – and the spurious claim that the nation is in the grip of an indefinable “woke blob”.
All this back and forth over the so-called “culture wars” is crowding out discussion about the third important policy area that really matters to voters, and the one that politicians still refuse to grapple with:At election time, housing has been the dog that didn’t bark for at least two decades. Politicians have become used to skirting the issue, because – frustrating though it has been to a growing proportion of voters – the housing crisis wasn’t a deciding matter in the voting booth.
This matters because it shows we’ve reached a tipping point: those who have managed to achieve home ownership are no longer insulated from the worst effects of
