The district's $2.2 billion budget for 2023-24 is largely the same as the one developed by former Superintendent Millard House II and the elected board.
Houston Independent School District Superintendent Mike Miles speaks during his presentation at the budget workshop of the school board meeting on Thursday, June 15, 2023, at the Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center in Houston. The board meeting changed the format and limited public seating to about 35 people for their second meeting. The room has a 310-person capacity.
Miles said that rather than slashing school funds, he plans to cut costs by eliminating about $30 million from the central office, $50 million in third-party contracts and $25 million in positions funded by pandemic relief dollars, which are set to run out by September 2024. “The foundation of it is equity,” Miles said last week. “You’ll see more resources going to underserved communities.”
