In his resignation letter, Herklotz wrote: 'While working in the jail is not a glamorous or flashy job, it is a noble profession and one that needs to be recognized as such. These people walk amongst some of the most violent and evil people on this earth.'

Shannon Herklotz, assistant chief of detentions at the Harris County Jail, is leaving the county sheriff's office, amid overcrowding and a rise in deaths.has resigned from his post, as the lockup continues to struggle with inmate deaths, staffing woes and overcrowding.

"While I pushed myself to new limits, the results were not always what I/we expected. I have no regrets and there is very little that I would change," Herklotz told Gonzalez in his letter."However, I feel that you and want to move in a new direction and I do not feel as I have a place in that vision. I respect your decision."

He is one of four high-ranking employees who have been reassigned, departed or given notice since the department underwent a structural overhaul in the wake of Spencer said the department's restructuring involved a change in title for Herklotz from chief of detentions to assistant chief for detentions command, and a corresponding reduction in pay. It also meant that Herklotz no longer answered directly to Sheriff Gonzalez, but instead reported to Chief Deputy Mike Lee.joined the department in 2021
