Colorado mayors urge state lawmakers to 'address shortcomings for fentanyl, PR bonds, and misdemeanor arrests'
As the mayors of Colorado’s two largest cities, we often work together and set aside politics to address urgent concerns. The COVID-19 pandemic made non-partisan collaboration even more critical.Top of our list: Crime and drug abuse. Cities across America are experiencing rising crime exacerbated by illicit drug use. Fentanyl, as well as a new and deadlier version of meth, is a public health threat responsible for almost half of overdose deaths in Colorado last year.
Last year, spurred by good intentions and incorporating some recommendations from the Criminal and Juvenile Justice Commission, bipartisan legislation was passed reducing numerous felonies to misdemeanors. Beginning next month, crimes including drug dealing, burglary, car theft and possession of a weapon by a previous offender are punishable by no more than 364 days in jail.
No one is more keenly aware of the dedicated employees that run our cities, or more appreciative of the value of their work, than mayors. While we’re philosophical opposites on the issue of unionization, as mayors we’re united in protecting local control.
