The bill’s sponsors called it a necessary move to protect public safety and property, but critics of the legislation said it would discourage political activism.
The Ohio House on Wednesday passed a pair of riot-related laws, sending them to the Ohio Senate for consideration. COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio House Republicans have passed a bill that would make a sweeping expansion of state riot laws in response to the social unrest related to the Black Lives Matter movement in the summer of 2020.
HB109 passed 59-35 in a mostly party-line vote. Its supporters include groups representing police and county prosecutors. Its opponents include left-leaning social-justice activists and civil-liberties groups. But Democrats who voted against the bill called it an overreach to property crimes that occurred during the 2020 social unrest in cities across the state, including vandalism and damage to buildings in downtown Columbus, including the Ohio Statehouse and other state buildings. Several Black Democrats spoke on the House floor against the bill.
“You suggest these bills are seeking to protect officers, but I would argue they are seeking to silence these voices you are hearing of the people you deem to be voiceless,” Marsita Ferguson, an activist with Black Lives Matter Lake County, said in written testimony last year to a committee that reviewed an earlier version of the bill.
HB325 passed by a 62-35 party-line vote, picking up a few more Republican votes. The bill′s supporters including gun-rights groups like the Buckeye Firearms Association and its opponents include the Ohio Municipal League and the Fraternal Order of Police.
