, has led me to take stock of my blessings. It’s addressed a range of thoughts I’ve had about business school, my career and fatherhood. Perhaps most importantly, the experiences he’s shared have helped me put some of my own narratives into perspective nine years after my dad’s passing.
I’m not sure if it’s easier to grieve through a slow death or a sudden one. Four months prior to my dad’s passing, his mother died of cancer. It was really hard on my dad. While he became a shell of himself, we became closer in those four months than we had been in my 27 years. I didn’t know what to do so I kept him company and became his chauffeur to and from appointments. I overheard him tell my aunt that he was thankful I was there for him during that time and that feedback meant a lot to me.
Scott concluded that the Harvard Medical School Grant Study, which is the largest study on happiness, highlighted that the presence of one thing in a man’s life predicted unhappiness better than any other factor: alcohol. “It led to failed marriages, careers coming off the tracks, and bad health.” It really wasn’t until that time in my life where I separated myself from drinking every weekend. A glass of wine out at dinner every few months became my new norm.
Scott appreciated Karsen’s help nonetheless. I could relate to some people exceeding or surprising my expectations in my own experience.
