The Government says that 'double taxation' on voters is unfair but Labour accuses the PM and Chancellor of making unfunded promises

The Prime Minister added: “Our long-term ambition is to end that unfairness, to keep cutting NICs until it’s gone, because that is the best way to reward hard work, simplify the tax system, and build the kind of society that I think is right. We’ve cut NICs by a third in two events over six months. So that demonstrates we are delivering and we can go further.

She told the BBC on Sunday: “I feel that the importance of fiscal rules in providing a constraint in which governments act is incredibly important. You saw what happened when Liz Truss and Kwasi Kwarteng tried to circumvent the fiscal rules. They didn’t allow the Office for Budget Responsibility to report. They undermined the Bank of England. I won’t do that because making sure that the sums add up, making sure that we start to get debt on a downward trajectory, is important.
