I’ve been writing about video games, television and movies for Forbes for over 10 years, and you may have seen my reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic. I cover all manner of console and PC games, but if it’s about looting or shooting, I’m definitely there. If I’m watching something, it’s usually science fiction, horror or superheroic.
There are a few special times in my video game writing career that I look back on with great fondness. Nothing will probably ever top those first few weeks of Pokémon GO that quite literally transformed the real world for a spell., when the game morphed from a building defense game to a battle royale.
Fortnite is still popular, but far from its glory days all this time later. Now, Epic is trying to recapture that original magic. It is using some sort of time travel shenanigans storyline to bring the game back to Chapter 1, and one of the earliest variants of the maps, complete with old loot and skins, it seems.
The season launches in just under a week on November 3, and the leaks are no longer leaks, as Epic is now promoting the season outright. They’ve just announced that at leastWill it work? I don’t know. I’m certainly curious to see how the battle pass is handled, whether it will be classic skins, updates classic skins, or new ones. Same for the shop. I do think it will create a surge of interest past what a normal new season would, which of course is the entire point.
I’m sure this will be a big hit for the game, though I wonder if the entire season is meant to keep the old map, or if this is a part of some greater “Fortnite through the years” storyline with rotating POIs and maps. Either way, we’ll know how it goes soon enough.
