Colin Powell is survived by his wife, Alma, and their three children.
Powell was born to Jamaican immigrants in Harlem in 1937 and joined a newly desegregated Army through the ROTC program at City College of New York. Bush released aon Monday after the news, writing: “He was a great public servant, starting with his time as a soldier during Vietnam.” Powell served as a platoon leader in Germany during the Cold War and served two decorated combat tours in Vietnam.
Powell’s career eventually took him to the upper echelons of the armed forces, where he served as national security adviser to then president Ronald Reagan and the 12th chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Powell then became the first Black U.S. secretary of state during the Bush administration, serving in that role from 2001 to 2005.in 1995, is survived by his wife, Alma, and their three children.
