public Facebook post, noting that he was fully vaccinatedThe statement, signed by The Powell Family, reads: “General Colin L. Powell, former U.S. Secretary of State and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, passed away this morning due to complications from Covid 19. He was fully vaccinated. We want to thank the medical staff at Walter Reed National Medical Center for their caring treatment. We have lost a remarkable and loving husband, father, grandfather and a great American.
Former President George W. Bush released a statement shortly after the Powell family, calling the former Secretary of State “a great public servant, starting with his time as a soldier during Vietnam.” Born on April 5, 1937, Powell was raised in Harlem and South Bronx and went to the City College of New York before enrolling in the army and serving in Vietnam from 1962-1963 and again from 1968-1969.
Later that year, President George Bush nominated him as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff — a position that saw him play a prominent role in the planned invasion of Panama, as well as the Desert Shield and Desert Storm operations in the Gulf War. He retired from the military in 1993 and later joined the Republican Party.
