If you need more macOS power, the obvious answer is Apple's new MacBook Pro. But there is a better alternative.
That unlocked the MacBook Air’s potential, and for many the newly updated ultraportable was more than enough MacBook for what they needed a laptop to do.
Since then, Apple has uprated the base M1 chip for the refreshed iMac, the new Mac Studio, and the newly-designed premium MacBook Pro laptops. For all of the advantages the vanilla M1 chipset has, it is now decidedly long in the tooth as the two-year mark approaches. With a new MacBook Air comes the likelihood of a new chipset. While the jury is out if Apple wants to start the M2 family with the MacBook Air, or use one of the uprated chipset in use to offer more performance on the MacBook Air, but not as much that it overtakes the more expensive Macs in the portfolio. Either way there will be a jump in performance for MacBook Air owners by the end of the year.
There are other benefits to waiting. As the first of the ARM-based Macs, many of the problems that were discovered in this architecture were found in the MacBook Air. That knowledge will have driven the updates in more recent Mac hardware. But anyone buying the older hardware will have the systemic bugs and issues still baked in.
Finally there’s fashion. That new design is also expected to reflect the iMac’s move towards pastel colours. Alongside the more angular design this could be the biggest and most welcome change to Apple’s consumer laptops in years....
