For veterans, holidays shed light on enduring fight against suicide | Opinion
Volunteers gathered Saturday to help the North Texas Stocking Campaign stuff thousands of Christmas stockings to go to soldiers overseas and veterans in hospitals and health care centers. This is just one example of ways North Texans can support veterans during a time of year that may be stressful for many of them, writes contributor Cole Lyle.For many, holidays mean spending time with family and attending joyous gatherings. For others, they can be a poignant reminder of a loved one lost.
The transition from the military to the civilian world can be challenging at any time of the year. Dealing with unemployment, relationship stress, lack of purpose, acute financial concern, substance abuse, etc., are all a part of the human condition that can be exacerbated by service-related issues. While there are support structures in place, not all veterans know of or utilize the full extent of their resources.
If you do not know any veterans personally, there are still a number of initiatives that allow you to show them your support. This year, Mission Roll Call gave members of Congress, their staffs and the general public the opportunity to write cards to veterans who are spending their holidays in a VA hospital. Initiatives like these can show veterans that we recognize their sacrifice and service for our country.
