Opinion: At the Jewish Federation, our goal is to add light, during Hanukkah and always [Opinion]

People participating in our many leadership development programs become leaders throughout the broader community. They serve on local nonprofit boards, run for elected office, are involved in schools, organize charity events, run local businesses and more. Honing their leadership skills and building their networks with other talented, committed people through the Federation programs benefits all of San Diego.

The Federation also supports elderly Jews who are isolated or experiencing poverty, with a particular focus on Holocaust survivors. These efforts undoubtedly strengthen our entire San Diego community, helping our most vulnerable neighbors to live meaningful, healthy and connected lives. These outcomes are similar to our work with local Jewish teens, who, like all teens, suffer from mental health challenges at much higher rates than in past generations.

Lastly, every San Diegan should be proud of how the Federation answered the call when Russia invaded Ukraine. Working closely with national and international partners, we raised over $665,000 from San Diegans that went directly to supporting basic human needs of Ukrainians, such as food, clothing, shelter and medical care. Our local nonprofit partners in Ukraine and neighboring countries aided thousands of people, including many non-Jews, who were affected by the ongoing conflict.

The Federation is just one of many local dynamic and impactful Jewish organizations helping Jewish engagement flourish in creative and exciting ways. Antisemitism is rising, and that is deeply concerning. But that is a sidebar to the main story; there has never been a better time to be Jewish in San Diego. Our community is resilient and robust, and Jewish life in San Diego is thriving, in every corner of the county.

Thousands of years ago, two great rabbis, Shamai and Hillel, debated the best way to light the menorah: start with eight candles and take one away on each of the eight days, or start with one candle and add another each day. The latter option prevailed, because the sage rabbis decided that it is always better to add light than to take it away. This, at its heart, is the goal and the obligation of Jewish Federation, to add light.
