If women believe they can have a career as an employee, and a family, without burning out, then their work and home lives must be structured to allow it

Last week, I dropped my eldest two children Astrid and Xavi off at a Harry Potter-themed holiday camp at 9am, had a lunchtime swim, worked until 3.30pm and then joined the children and my husband Mark on the beach for a quick dip that I’ve felt confident enough to risk the ebbs and flows of self-employment as a parent.

Will employers be tolerant of people shuffling their schedules, taking the month of August off work so they can spend the holiday with their children, for example, or working a set number of hours each week but completing them when they want? She would like to see much stricter criteria on why a request could be rejected. “We would welcome higher penalties for unreasonably rejecting a request so employers face real consequences and are forced to take requests seriously,” she says. “If employers feel unable to fulfil a request, trial periods should be explored, with an obligation to evidence how this has not worked at the end of the trial.
