Pub closures continue to blight Lancashire - although some areas are faring better than others

‘Devastating’ pub closures continue to hit Lancashire, leaving communities without a focal point surviving landlords fearing for their futures.

There are fewer pubs in England and Wales than ever before, as a result of lockdown disruption to the industry, and recovery being stifled by the ongoing inflation and cost of living crisis. As of last month, there were 39,973 pubs following a decrease of 931 pubs since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, according to research from real estate advisers Altus Group.

In the same month, similar emotions greeted the closure of the Butlers Arms in Pleasington. Among those to share their sadness, one punter said: “I’m absolutely gutted for Mike and the team. Butlers is a smashing pub and a lot of work, blood, sweat and tears went into success. You have played a massive part in supporting men in the area also and from us all at Blokes United, thank you and it certainly ain’t a goodbye.

Asked about the impact of closures, he added: “It does happen in a lot of places, it’s strange. I find that a lot of my regulars travel to me because of the quality of the beer but also because of the friendly atmosphere. Looking at other places, in my parents' village, if the pub went, they’d be lost. It’s there as a community hub where anyone can go.

Earlier this year, the Issa Brothers won permission to knock down the 200-year-old Saddle Inn in Preston for their latest forecourt. The pub dates back to 1786 and according to a heritage report it is “possible that the buildings at The Saddle Inn began as a farm with a room in use as an alehouse but were more formally converted to an inn by the early 1840s”.

He said: “Pubs are struggling in the current climate, with the coronavirus effect as well. It'll probably take until summer before it gets back to normal. I’m definitely sad to see it go, so are a lot of people. It’s an old pub, there’s a lot of new houses being built, a hell of a lot, so there’s plenty of demand.”

Closures often hit rural communities smaller, sometimes taking away the only venue which was capable of bringing large numbers of otherwise unconnected people together. Neville Grundy, press officer for CAMRA Southport and West Lancashire, agrees with that argument. Pubs, like many businesses in the hospitality industry, were hit disproportionately hard by COVID restrictions, as shown in an ONS report last year.
