Riverside walk with spectacular 1000m-high views that ends with refreshing drink at popular Ribble Valley pub
If you’re going for a walk in Lancashire, it’s fair to expect some spectacular views and that’s exactly what’s on offer in this week’s suggested route.
Starting and ending at a much loved, dog-and-family-friendly pub in the Ribble Valley, it will take you along the riverside, through farmland and meadows and to a viewpoint 1,000m above sea level. The circular route is based from the village of Mellor meaning you can travel from one of the neighbouring towns on public transport or park at the starting point - the Spread Eagle pub.
The walk itself is a challenging one, with long, steady climbs on paths and tracks followed by a rugged descent. It covers around six miles, taking around three and a half hours, so it’s important to be properly prepared with appropriate clothing, footwear and hydration.In return for the effort, you’ll be treated to the beauty of the Lancashire countryside and on a clear day you’ll get views from Birdie Brow to Pendle and up the Ribble Valley to Pen-y-ghent and Ingleborough.
The pub was taken under new ownership earlier this year and underwent a transformation of the bar area and upgraded outdoor terrace. Once inside, there’s vintage wines and premium batch spirits available, craft beers on tap and food menu featuring pub classics mixed in with specials, seasonal dishes and a brunch menu offering for the first time.
