Comic-Con International's beloved souvenir books have featured the biggest artists over the years and are collectables
At the Comic-Con Museum in Balboa Park in San Diego, display of the first program book designed by Jack Kirby for Golden State Comic-Con, which was first held in 1970 in the basement of the U.S. Grant Hotel. The 1980 cover of Comic-Con’s souvenir book by artist Jack Katz. On display at the Comic-Con Museum in Balboa Park. The 1986 Comic-Con souvenir book by John Romita, Sr., featuring Wolverine, Spider-Man, She-Hulk and other characters on the beach.
Covers back then could be a tad risqué. In 1978, fantasy artist Boris Vallejo drew a half naked fairy for the cover and, in 1980, artist Jack Katz drew a topless female warrior. Frank Miller, a well-known writer and artist, set out to create the most California cover possible in 1993. It features five teenagers flying through a sunset over palm trees in a convertible while reading comic books. “Kids, comics, cars and San Diego weather,” Miller is recorded saying about the cover at the time. “What more could you want?”
