The Red Lion community continues to honor the 12-year-old who was killed on April first of this year. Police say the boy was shot in the back by a teen just one year older after a tumultuous day involving both the suspect and the victim."He loved cars, motorcycles, just being out, doing stuff,” said Kevin Quickel, Heiland's stepfather.
In keeping Kain Heiland's memory alive, friends of the family organized a bike ride, Kickstands for Kain, in his honor. "Unfortunately, this year, due to the weather, we had to cancel the ride portion. But thanks to the Glen Rock Legion, we can still congregate, have a meal, make some memories," said Dillon Ward, a friend of the family. But those who knew Heiland the best held the event anyway at the American Legion Post 403.An outpouring of love and support filled the room. It was clear to anyone there, that the family was dedicated to one another and committed to a good cause.
"We don't want this to happen to anybody else. That's why we're keeping it alive," said Arvin. "We all know he's with us always." The family says the Kickstands for Kain bike ride will happen in the Spring, likely on what would have been Heiland's 14th birthday on April 23.
