Lenny Gaertner's family raises awareness and funds each year in the Cleveland Walk to End Alzheimer's. The Lakewood firefighter died from the effects of dementia in 2017. CLEVELAND, Ohio -- When Rita Gaertner’s father, Lenny Gaertner, died from the effects of dementia, she knew exactly what to do to remember him.
“It all started when my dad passed away six years ago from frontotemporal lobe dementia. Maureen and I were doing the walk for someone else and realized we should be doing it for Dad,” Gaertner said. “This year, we have donated more than $25,000 to the walk, as it has a special place in our hearts. Everyone is touched in one way or another by dementia.”
“The actual Association is a great place. There is a 24/7 helpline that anyone can call, whether you are a caregiver having a tough time with a patient, or a family member who does not know what to do. “But to get there, we need each person in our community to register today and help us raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research.”
