Carlos Sainz takes the W and the L in defending against Max Verstappen, while Mercedes lets Red Bull take the high ground.
It was a clear, sunny day at Monza on Sunday. The warm temperatures played havoc on most teams’ tires. But not Red Bull.
Whatever witch’s brew the Red Bull engineers have bubbling away in their factories paid off again at the Italian GP. The car’s design minimized tire wear enough to neutralize Ferrari’s hopes of an undercut. It allowed Verstappen and Pérez to hound drivers in front of them without fear of shortening their stints. Both Red Bull drivers said they didn’t know how bad anyone’s deg would be in the GP.
“It probably nearly cost me a podium,” Sainz said, “because it meant that I was wearing a lot my tires and using the tires more than probably what I would have liked, and making me very vulnerable towards the end of the stints, and always under a lot of pressure by Max first, than Checo, than Charles. In the end … we made it – but it was a tough one. A very tough one.”
“We have a steep hill to climb,” Magnussen said. “It’s really confusing, though, because in FP3, we were P7, and today, we were the slowest by a big margin. There was just no pace – we need to turn this ship around.”Genre #3: The Mercedes-Red Bull cold warIt feels like F1’s been chasing the high of Lewis Hamilton and Verstappen’s 2021 championship duel ever since. Many fans are desperate for a competitor to challenge Red Bull’s smothering dominance.
