While Max Verstappen made history at Monza, Ferrari's Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc drivers shined in front of their home crowd.
Leclerc was the second-best Ferrari driver during the Italian Grand Prix weekend, but there was a slight difference once the 25-year-old switched his setup to a similar direction as Sainz’s.
After struggling through the first half of the season, Russell has spoken about wanting to take a more patient, “back to basics” approach. The penalty aside, Monza was a pretty flawless execution of that. It’s hard to imagine that Williams could have finished higher than seventh, particularly because of its car’s tire degradation, and Alex Albon got the max out of his FW45 once again.
Pérez struggled on Saturday after losing a chunk of running in FP3 due to issues on his car, leaving him on the back foot going into qualifying. From fifth on the grid, he dueled with Russell in the opening stint, eventually getting ahead and quickly getting close to the Ferraris.Like Verstappen, Pérez patiently waited for the right opportunity to strike and make his overtakes, allowing him to overhaul both Leclerc and Sainz.
Nothing particularly eye-catching came from practice or qualifying from the Alfa Romeo garage, though Bottas did advance to Q2 and secured a P14 start for the grand prix. The Finnish driver competed on an inverted tire strategy — starting on the hards and switching to the mediums. He commented after the race that the hard compound degraded quicker than expected, “and the medium was kind of overperforming, so we just split the race into two even amount of laps.
