The government will test its new emergency alerts system on Sunday this week
A new emergency alerts service that will warn people about nearby threats through their mobile phones is being launched by the government.
What will the new Emergency Alert system be used for? The emergency alert system is designed to warn people about threats to their life in their local area, in particular when there is a need for the public to take action. Does it cost anything to use? No. The alert system is free to use and available to anyone in the UK with a mobile phone that uses a 4G or 5G phone network. If you don't want to receive emergency alerts, you will be able to turn them off.
How will my personal data be used or stored? No, your specific location or any personal information is not used or stored. The system uses cell towers to work out who to send the alert to. When an alert is triggered, all towers in the area will broadcast the alert to phones in the area. How do you turn off emergency alerts? You can turn the emergency alerts system off in your phone’s settings. To do so, go to the Emergency Alerts section of your mobile device and turn off ‘severe alerts’ and ‘extreme alerts’.
