El Niño has officially arrived and could last through winter. The warming of tropical waters in the eastern Pacific typically translates into wetter and cooler conditions for Texans, National Weather Service forecasters say.

On Thursday, the government forecasters at thedeclaring that the weather event"set up shop in the tropical Pacific in June 2023, and conditions are predicted to strengthen in coming months."

El Niño is the occasional but natural warming of sea temperatures in the eastern Pacific Ocean along the equator. The phenomenon can alter weather patterns around the world, but for us it can affect the flow of the jet stream in the northern hemisphere so that winds tend to deliver wetter and cooler conditions to Texas.

Meteorologists don't expect to see any immediate effects from El Niño, however, according to Keith White, a lead forecaster at the National Weather Service's New Braunfels office serving San Antonio, those effects could be seen in the fall and winter. "In the fall, when we enter our tropical season, closer to August and September, El Niño would typically lead to a lower-than-normal season for the overall Atlantic cyclone energy," White said."However, due to competing factors, including above-normal sea-surface temperatures, the expectation this year is for an active season for easterly waves off Africa, which help lead to tropical storm development.

"Beyond the tropics, the impact on the weather in the fall and the winter are when we'll see the highest impacts," White continued."This summer is expected to be hot, with potential precipitation amounts, below-normal, normal, and above-normal, in equal chances. Later this year, we'll likely see cooler and wetter conditions, which is good for those areas around us in need of more rain. Despite the rains this spring, we're still in an exceptional drought.
