Robert Downey Jr. plays the good doctor in an antic, but unfunny misfire. Read our full review:
is awfully tame in comparison. But there are still a few glimmers of madness to be found in this exorbitantly expensive January toss-off, which could prove satisfying for certain sickos and freaks out there who have, post-is a film made for children. So we should probably mostly view it through that lens. In that regard, the movie is perfectly okay.
There is, of course, also the matter of Robert Downey Jr., here tasked with playing Dr. Dolittle as a grieving weirdo, a widower locked up behind the walls of his zoo-like estate. Dolittle speaks in an accent that is perhaps Welsh-ish and spends his first moments in the movie erratically mumbling to his animals. It’s a Performance, for sure, but somehow it never becomes an insufferable bit. He’s endearing, this Dolittle, in his borderline illegible way.
