“There’s nothing better than being his father,” Phillips said recently, grinning at the prospect of his first Father’s Day. “I genuinely feel changed.” By the time he got back on the mound, thrown into the sixth inning of a game the Dodgers were trailing, Phillips found his mind veering. The Dodgers deployed Phillips in lower-leverage situations before the club returned home. “I think was aware of my headspace,” Phillips said.After the Dodgers lost 5-2 to the Padres at Petco Park on May 5, Phillips drove from San Diego back to Los Angeles.Phillips noticed something recently.
